NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J.- Former Rutgers student, Dharun Ravi, who was convicted for bias crimes for taping his roommate kissing another man and then posting the video on social media - which consequentially led to his room-mate's suicide, was released from jail Tuesday.
Ravi, 20, reported to Middlesex County jail on May 31. Although he was given a 30 day jail sentence, the 20 year old was given five days off for good behavior. In addition to the jail sentence, Ravi faces a fine of over $11,000, three years of probation and 300 hours of community service.
According to reports from the Federal Immigration authorities, Ravi will not be deported to India. Ravi possesses an Indian citizenship, but has lived in the United States since he was five years old.
Ravi underwent a three week trial in March for video-tapping his roommate Tyler Clementi, 18, kissing another man and posting the video on various social media sites in September, as a result the humiliated Clementi committed suicide. Ravi was not charged with his death, but was charged on 15 criminal counts including bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and tapering with a witness which he was convicted of in March.
Prosecutors are appealing the case to get Ravi a longer sentence, ravi is appealing the conviction, pleading not guilty.
Ravi has served 20 out of his 30 days of jail sentence. His lawyer, Steven Altman, announced that he will soon start paying his fines as well as begin his community service.
According AP, Ravi did not speak to any media on his release from jail.
