Syria on the Brink of Civil War?

By

SYRIA.- With violence escalating in the Syria, the United Nations special envoy Kofi Annan calls for an international conference to do something about the situation. However Annan announced that the "peace plan was the only one on table," as reported by BBC News, thus dismissing any suggestions of an armed intervention.

Currently, mr. Annan's six point peace plan is in place, however an increasing number of violent incidences have prompted some countries to question its viability and has them talking about a possible international intervention to remove President Bashar al-Assad from power.

Reports today revealed that violence has been increasing in the town of Haffa, near Dier al-zour, with already 10 activists dead. In light of rumors that the government is planning another massacre, rebels from Free Syrian Army (FSA) are evacuating civilians.

FSA commander told Reuters: "The situation is dire. Forget the weapons, people need medicine and food. As you know, we're in a state of war in Syria. The army could enter Haffa in minutes if it wanted but it is trying to crush it instead."

In earlier reports today, the United Nations accused the troops for using children as human shields.

Mr. Annan's spokesman, Ahmad Fawzi, told BBC News that the U.N. wanted to intensify diplomatic pressure. BBC News reports that "Syrian ally Russia is coming under particular pressure to apply its influence on Damascus."

Last week, United Nations monitors were attacked while trying to enter the village of Quabair, site of a recent massacre that left at least 78 civilians dead. Just days before the Houla massacr, in which over 108 people were killed.

In an address to the General Assembly at the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, the secretary general, called the incident "shocking and sickening," and that President al-Assad had lost legitimacy.

Kofi Annan says that although his plan has been accepted by Syria, it is not yet implemented. Annan told BBC News that "individual action and interventions will not resolve the crisis."
