SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY, N.J.-The former Fugees singer, Lauryn Hill, claimed that she went "underground," and did cheat on her taxes. On Friday, the 37-year-old was charged by a federal prosecutor in New Jersey on three counts of misdemeanor including "knowingly and willfully failing to make an income tax return to the IRS," according to Good Morning America.
The five-time Grammy winner, on Tumblr, a social media outlet, announced that she had been on a type of societal hibernation and therefore did not file for tax returns. According to Hill, she had faithfully filed for taxes with IRS until it became "necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family," according to ABC News.
Reports suggest that Hill earned more than $1.6 million cumulatively in the years of 2005, 2006, and 2007. She has failed to file tax returns for all those years. Hill's case is scheduled for a court hearing on June 29. If found guilty, she could face up to three years in prison and a $300,000 fine.
Lauryn Hill rose to prominence as a singer, song writer, rapper in 1998 for the R&B band the Fugees, she later released her solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which went on to be one of the biggest hits that year.
Hill now has six children and is living in South Orange County in New Jersey.
