Sidley Austin LLP is pleased to announce that Mark D. Hopson, a member of the firm’s Management and Executive Committees, will assume the role of Managing Partner of the firm’s 275 lawyer Washington, D.C. office. Mr. Hopson succeeds Carter G. Phillips, who previously served in that role, who is becoming the Co-Chair of Sidley’s Executive Committee, effective May 1, 2012.
“After 17 years of managing the Washington, D.C. office, I am so gratified that a lawyer and colleague of Mark’s stature has agreed to become the office’s Managing Partner,” said Mr. Phillips. “In his two decades in our D.C. office, Mark has developed into an exceptionally gifted lawyer and manager. He has played an indispensible role in the success of the D.C. office and everyone in the firm has complete confidence in his leadership going forward.”
“It is an honor to be asked to take over management responsibilities from Carter Phillips, who built not only a world class practice, but a world class office here in Washington,” said Mr. Hopson. “I hope to provide continuity and support for an office that has an abundance of talented lawyers both as leaders in their practices and in the profession as a whole. As the firm expands on our successful national and global platform, the opportunities for the D.C. office will continue to grow.”
Mr. Hopson is a co-head of the firm’s White Collar practice. His practice has involved a wide range of white collar criminal and complex civil litigation matters, including the defense of clients in jury trials. He also represents clients in connection with a range of governmental and internal investigation matters. As was and will be the case with Mr. Phillips, Mr. Hopson will continue to maintain an active litigation practice.
Mr. Hopson is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has served as a trial practice instructor and an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University Law Center. He has been recognized as a leading lawyer in his field in Chambers USA (D.C. Litigation: White Collar Crimes & Government Investigations), Benchmark Litigation (D.C. White Collar) and PLC Dispute Resolution Cross-border Handbook (White Collar Investigations). He has also been named by Super Lawyers magazine as one of the Top 100 lawyers in Washington based on a vote of peers, by Washingtonian magazine as one of the “Top Lawyers in Washington” and was recognized in the 2012 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in Bet-the-Company Litigation, White Collar Criminal Defense and Regulatory Enforcement Litigation. In 1984, after graduation from the Georgetown University Law Center, Mr. Hopson served as a law clerk to Judge Thomas F. Hogan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
