DLA Piper today announces the appointment of Prakash (PK) Paran to the firm’s London office as a partner in the Corporate group and member of the global Insurance and Reinsurance Sector Group, along with Roger Loo and Melanie James as counsel. The group joins DLA Piper from Dewey & LeBoeuf.
PK Paran has broad-based corporate transactional experience most notably in the insurance sector with a focus on equity capital markets (representing both underwriters and issuers), insurance linked securities, mergers and acquisitions (including complex cross border and competitive auction transactions), joint ventures and corporate reorganisations. PK trained and qualified at Simmons & Simmons before moving to Dewey & LeBoeuf.
Roger Loo is a corporate insurance specialist with extensive experience of advising insurers and other major financial institutions on corporate transactions and financial services regulation. Roger also regularly advises on complex reinsurance structures, outsourcing arrangements, policy wordings and compliance issues. Roger has previously worked in the corporate insurance teams of Allen & Overy in London and Allens Arthur Robinson in Sydney.
Melanie James was head of operations and a director of a Lloyd's Broker in the City of London prior to joining Dewey & LeBoeuf. Melanie advises on all aspects of non-contentious insurance matters including financial services regulation, insurance and intermediary start-ups and compliance, cross border insurance and reinsurance mergers and acquisitions, Lloyd’s regulation, Lloyd's capacity offers and auctions, Lloyd's trust funds, and establishing Lloyd’s vehicles.
“PK, Roger and Melanie have impressive backgrounds and their history of handling large deals around the world will be a significant complement to our existing offering in London and across our global platform, allowing us to continue to provide the full range of services integral to all aspects of the life cycle of complex transactions,” said Charles Severs, head of DLA Piper’s UK Corporate group. “London is one of the world’s premier insurance markets and the hire of PK will enable us to further our strategic goal of establishing DLA Piper's London Corporate group as a leading City practice.”
Juan Picon, EMEA head of Corporate at DLA Piper, added: “a strong focus on key sectors is of paramount importance to implementing our strategic plan. With the arrival of Basel III and other Solvency regulations, the insurance sector is one which will continue to have very significant levels of activity and we intend to be a key player in it. The new additions in New York and London, together with our existing resources, place us in a unique position.”
“The arrival of this team continues the development of our global insurance and reinsurance capabilities,” said Bill Marcoux, head of DLA Piper’s Insurance Sector Transactions and Regulation practice. “PK is an extremely talented, client focused corporate lawyer with deep industry knowledge and extensive experience handling complex, cross-border transactional, regulatory and finance matters. Roger and Melanie have decades of experience handling a wide array of regulatory matters, which of course is of critical importance to our clients. This first-rate team, combined with the exceptionally strong corporate and regulatory practice that the firm’s London office already provides, positions us as one of the go to insurance firms in London."
